The monastery pleasure garden

Garden work was considered by the monks to be a useful activity pleasing to God. Monastery gardens were symbols of Paradise that could only be achieved on earth with the help of the Church. They planted fruit trees in these gardens as symbols of the resurrection. The Wiblingen pleasure garden is the oldest preserved garden of the monastery. It was redesigned according to the old axial order: The complex is divided in the shape of a cross and framed by a surrounding path. Next to the grass areas, fruit trees were also planted in single rows.
